Kaspersky Support professional suggests that for Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 a password of the local user Administrator is required.

On some computer configurations the key F8 is used to select a physical drive to boot from. In this case select a hard disk drive with installed OS. Once you have pressed Enter, keep pressing F8 until Windows Advanced Options Menu is displayed.

Once you perform required action in the Safe Mode, reboot the computer.

Steps to be followed if your PC boots only in standard mode

If a computer boots only in the normal mode and “blue screen” when choosing safe mode, it is possible that the registry branch Safeboot responsible for booting in safe mode is damaged. It can be restored using the previously imported .reg file. So how to restore it? Follow the below steps carefully.

  1. Download the archive
  2. Extract the archive to the computer (for example, using WinZip).
  3. Run the .reg file corresponding to your operating system:
    • SafeBootWin200.reg for Windows 2000;
    • SafeBootWinXP.reg for Windows XP;
    • SafeBootWinServer2003.reg for Windows 2003;
    • SafeBootVista.reg for Windows Vista;
    • SafeBoot7.reg for Windows 7;
    • SafeBoot8.reg for Windows 8/8.1/10

    On computers working under the Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10 operating system a message from the User Account Control service may appear. To continue the process, click Yes in the open window.

  4. Click Yes in the Registry editor window
  5. Reboot the computer in the normal mode

There could be one more possible problem, which usually users come across. What if the boot menu doesn’t appear after F8 have been pressed?

Steps to resolve this problem are:

  • Open the Run command
  • In the Run window enter msconfig and click OK
  • In the dialog System configuration window, switch to the Boot tab
  • Select the Safe boot check box (/SAFEBOOT for Windows XP)
  • Click OK
  • To apply the modified settings, click Restart

After computer restart, boot your computer in the Safe Mode

Once you have performed the necessary actions you need to uncheck the /SAFEBOOT option. It will allow to reboot your computer in the normal mode.
